BUYING GUIDE

Which laptop fits the way you work?

Start with your day, not a processor badge. A practical shortlist for study, work and creative projects.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Choose for the software you actually use, the places you work and the connections you need. A faster processor cannot fix a screen or keyboard you dislike.

1. Write down your three main tasks

List your everyday tasks and the most demanding application you rely on. Email, browser tabs and documents call for a different balance than editing long videos or playing demanding games. Check the recommended requirements of your essential software before choosing an operating system or processor platform. Compatibility should be a requirement, not an assumption.

2. Compare configurations, not just model names

Two laptops with the same family name can have different memory, screens and storage. RAM is working space for active applications; storage holds your files. They solve different problems. Look at your current memory use and storage needs, then allow room for the way your work may grow.

  • Record the exact model number, RAM and storage for each offer.
  • Check whether memory or storage can be upgraded; do not assume they can.
  • Budget for necessary software, adapters and an external drive.

3. Prioritise the things you use all day

If you travel, consider the charger and laptop together when comparing weight. If you mainly work at a desk, screen comfort and your monitor connections may matter more. Try the keyboard and trackpad where possible. Battery claims depend on test conditions; compare those conditions and seek a review that reflects your workload.

4. Make a two-model shortlist

Give each candidate three columns: must-haves, compromises and complete cost. For example, a lower-priced laptop that needs a dock and external storage may be less attractive than it first appears. Conversely, a premium graphics option adds little value if your applications do not use it. Eliminate models that miss a must-have before looking at discounts.
