BUYING GUIDE
Which fridge keeps your groceries organised and fresh?
Compare fridge and freezer layouts, cooling, No Frost, freshness drawers, noise and installation before choosing.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Usable shelf space, stable cooling and a practical freezer matter every day. Choose a layout and cooling system that suit your groceries, then compare efficiency and price.
1. Choose the format and check installation
Decide between a standalone fridge, fridge-freezer and a larger multi-door design. For integrated models, confirm the cabinet dimensions and door fixing system. Measure ventilation space and whether doors open far enough to remove drawers. Check the permitted room temperature range if the appliance will stand in a garage or unheated room.
2. Compare usable storage, not just litres
Compare fridge and freezer capacity separately. Try the layout with your tall bottles, large pans and usual shopping. Adjustable shelves, split shelves and accessible drawers can be more useful than extra total volume. Check how much room an ice dispenser takes and whether its water supply uses plumbing or a refillable tank.
3. Cooling and freshness controls
Look for evidence of temperature stability and even cooling throughout the cabinet. Separate temperature controls and dedicated cooling circuits are different features; check what the model actually provides. Humidity-controlled vegetable drawers and lower-temperature fresh-food zones serve different storage needs. Check their adjustment range and recommended contents rather than assuming every drawer with a freshness name is equivalent.
4. No Frost, freezing and defrosting
No Frost avoids routine manual freezer defrosting; Low Frost reduces frost build-up but does not eliminate defrosting. Check which compartment the claim covers. If you freeze large batches, compare freezing capacity in kilograms per 24 hours and any fast-freeze setting. Check freezer star rating, temperature alarms and the stated safe storage time during a power interruption.
5. Noise, access and upkeep
For an open kitchen, compare stated noise and seek feedback on compressor or fan sounds. Check door alarms, internal lighting, handle access and whether hinges can be reversed. Inspect how easily shelves, seals and drawers can be cleaned or replaced. Water and ice dispensers add filter and cleaning tasks; decide whether you will use them enough.
6. Efficiency and the final choice
Compare annual label consumption among models with suitable storage and features. Energy efficiency matters for an appliance that stays on, but should not outweigh poor temperature control or an awkward layout. Include delivery, installation, service and necessary water filters in the budget, then choose the compromises that fit your kitchen.
