Choosing a fridge: layout, frost-free cooling and freshness drawers

Capacity in litres does not tell the whole story. Explore how shelves, cooling zones, freezing capacity, defrosting and noise affect daily use.

Everyday uses

Weekly shopping, frozen meals and an open kitchen

Fresh vegetables need a different layout from stacks of frozen meals. In an open kitchen, noise deserves extra attention too.

One big weekly shop

Try wide shelves, large produce drawers and room for packaging. Look at fridge and freezer capacity separately.

Batch cooking

Prioritise freezer layout and freezing capacity. Check that containers come out of drawers easily with the door open.

An open kitchen

Consider fan and compressor sounds, handles and door direction. The fridge runs while you relax, too.

THE DIFFERENCES

No Frost, Low Frost and freshness features explained

No Frost, Low Frost and freshness features explained
Option Benefit Consideration
No Frost Avoids routine manual freezer defrosting. Check which compartment the feature covers.
Low Frost Reduces frost build-up compared with a conventional design. Manual defrosting is still needed.
Humidity control An adjustable drawer for suitable fruit and vegetables. Different from an extra-cold storage zone.
Fast freeze For adding a larger batch of fresh food. Also check the freezing capacity per 24 hours.

Choose the format and check installation

Decide between a standalone fridge, fridge-freezer and a larger multi-door design. For integrated models, confirm the cabinet dimensions and door fixing system. Measure ventilation space and whether doors open far enough to remove drawers. Check the permitted room temperature range if the appliance will stand in a garage or unheated room.

SPEND WISELY

Worth paying more for

A layout that fits your groceries, stable cooling and easy cleaning.

Lower priorities

A dispenser that uses shelf space but rarely gets used.

Compare usable storage, not just litres

Compare fridge and freezer capacity separately. Try the layout with your tall bottles, large pans and usual shopping. Adjustable shelves, split shelves and accessible drawers can be more useful than extra total volume. Check how much room an ice dispenser takes and whether its water supply uses plumbing or a refillable tank.

Controlling temperature and humidity

A produce drawer with humidity control and an extra-cold freshness zone do different jobs. Check the recommended contents and available settings. Also consider how evenly the fridge maintains its temperature. Separate temperature controls for fridge and freezer do not automatically mean separate cooling circuits; check the technical description for that.

No Frost, freezing and defrosting

No Frost avoids routine manual freezer defrosting; Low Frost reduces frost build-up but does not eliminate defrosting. Check which compartment the claim covers. If you freeze large batches, compare freezing capacity in kilograms per 24 hours and any fast-freeze setting. Check freezer star rating, temperature alarms and the stated safe storage time during a power interruption.

Noise, access and upkeep

For an open kitchen, compare stated noise and seek feedback on compressor or fan sounds. Check door alarms, internal lighting, handle access and whether hinges can be reversed. Inspect how easily shelves, seals and drawers can be cleaned or replaced. Water and ice dispensers add filter and cleaning tasks; decide whether you will use them enough.

Efficiency and the final choice

Compare annual label consumption among models with suitable storage and features. Energy efficiency matters for an appliance that stays on, but should not outweigh poor temperature control or an awkward layout. Include delivery, installation, service and necessary water filters in the budget, then choose the compromises that fit your kitchen.
