From beans to cappuccino: comparing automatic coffee machines

Good coffee takes more than a long touchscreen menu. Compare grind adjustment, taste settings, milk frothing and cleaning to choose a machine you will enjoy using every day.

Everyday uses

Espresso, cappuccino or coffee for a busy household

Your usual morning routine says more about the machine you need than the number of drinks in its menu.

Mostly black coffee

Prioritise taste, adjustable drink volume and coffee dose. An elaborate automatic milk system adds little if you rarely use it.

Daily cappuccinos

Compare foam texture, milk temperature and the work after each drink. Count the parts that need removing and rinsing.

Several coffee drinkers

Profiles, accessible reservoirs and a practical spout help repeated use. Check which drinks can actually be made two at a time.

THE DIFFERENCES

Three approaches to milk frothing

Three approaches to milk frothing
Option Benefit Consideration
Steam wand Gives direct control over frothing. Needs practice, a jug and cleaning after use.
Milk tube Convenient automatic preparation from a carton or container. The tube and milk circuit need their specified cleaning routine.
Removable milk carafe Makes automatic milk drinks from a dedicated container. Compare removable parts, storage and cleaning programmes.

Milk quality and cleaning go together

Try the milk or plant-based drink you normally use. Compare texture, temperature and the balance of milk and foam. Then examine the complete cleaning routine: automatic rinsing does not always replace dismantling and washing components. Check dishwasher suitability and the number of steps needed after making a cappuccino.

SPEND WISELY

Worth paying more for

Adjustments that produce your favourite coffee and a milk system that is easy to clean. Accessible reservoirs and useful profiles help households with several users.

Lower priorities

A long recipe list, an app or a high pump-pressure figure without better coffee. Avoid a complicated milk system for one occasional cappuccino.

Grind, dose and volume shape the taste

Compare control over grind size, coffee quantity, water volume and temperature. These settings work together with your beans; more grind steps do not automatically produce better coffee. A high advertised pump pressure does not predict flavour either. If possible, taste both an espresso and a longer coffee and check that you can adjust them separately. Follow the instructions when changing the grinder setting.

Different recipes or different proportions?

A long menu may partly consist of different ratios of coffee and milk. Check which settings can be saved and how easily users switch profiles. Find out how a large coffee is prepared: pushing more water through the same grounds differs from adding hot water to an espresso. A ground-coffee bypass may be useful for an occasional decaffeinated drink.

Brew group and water maintenance

Some machines have a brew group you remove yourself; others use cleaning programmes for a fixed unit. Compare the prescribed maintenance and access. Set water hardness correctly and follow the model’s descaling guidance. A water filter does not automatically remove every maintenance task. Check availability of filters, cleaning supplies and spare parts.

Space on the worktop

Measure the space above and beside the machine as well as its footprint. Water tanks may lift upward or slide out from the front or side. Check spout clearance with your favourite cup and access to the drip tray and grounds container. A larger tank is convenient for frequent use but should still be easy to fill and clean.

Noise, waiting and everyday controls

Listen to grinding, pumping and milk preparation if you make early coffee in an open kitchen. Compare warm-up, rinsing and several drinks made in succession. Check that essential settings are easy to reach and whether an app adds anything useful. Automatic shut-off is helpful, while taste, cleaning and dependable controls affect nearly every cup.
