THE DIFFERENCES

How smart bulbs connect

How smart bulbs connect
Option Benefit Consideration
Wi-Fi Often connects directly to your home network. Check network requirements, cloud dependence and platform support.
Zigbee Connects supported lights, sensors and switches in one system. Usually needs a bridge; available functions vary between combinations.
Matter over Thread Can work with several supported smart home platforms. Needs a Thread border router and a suitable Matter controller.
Bluetooth Convenient for controlling a few nearby lights. Remote access and automation may need extra equipment.

Everyday uses

One reading lamp or a connected home?

The number of rooms and the way you control them determine which features matter. Try a small setup, including its lowest brightness setting, before expanding.

A first smart room

Compare a direct Wi-Fi or Bluetooth setup with a starter kit. Check which functions need an additional hub.

Reading and working

Prioritise useful white light, natural colour rendering and smooth dimming. Adjustable white tones may be more useful than colour effects.

Several connected rooms

Look for reliable group control, sensors and physical switches that everyone at home can use.

Matter, Thread and bridges do different jobs

Matter provides a common way for devices and platforms to work together; Thread is a networking technology. Matter bulbs can also use Wi-Fi. Thread needs a border router, while Zigbee generally needs a compatible bridge. Check which roles your existing hub or speaker supports. Special scenes and entertainment effects may still require the manufacturer’s app.

SPEND WISELY

Worth paying more for

Smooth dimming, useful white tones and physical switches. A reliable system for several rooms can justify the cost of a bridge.

Lower priorities

Colour effects in rooms where you only use white light, or a large starter kit before trying its light quality.

Light output, white tones and colour rendering

Lumens describe light output; kelvin describes the tint of white light. Lower colour temperatures look warmer. Colour rendering also matters for the appearance of food, faces and furnishings. A bulb may produce less light in colour mode than in white mode, so compare output in the settings you will use. The beam pattern determines where that light actually falls.

The lowest brightness matters too

Maximum output tells you little about a gentle bedside light. Check minimum brightness, smooth transitions and any visible flicker. Some bulbs become warmer as they dim; others keep the same colour temperature. Try the bulb in its intended shade or spotlight because the fitting changes the light you see.

Keep the wall switch in mind

A smart bulb needs power to remain reachable. Turning off its ordinary wall switch usually stops commands and routines. Consider a compatible wireless switch or controls that leave the power on. Check what happens after a power cut and whether switches and schedules still work without an internet connection.

Fittings and installation space

Check the socket type as well as bulb length and width. Confirm suitability for enclosed fittings, damp rooms or outdoor use. Use an existing dimmer only if the manufacturer supports that combination. For light strips, check cutting intervals, power supply, mounting and extension limits before planning the installation.

Expanding the system

Compare the availability of replacement bulbs, sensors and remotes. Check account requirements, software support and subscriptions for optional functions. Include a necessary bridge in the purchase price. Compare power consumption at similar light output, while keeping light quality and reliable controls central to the decision.
