Inkjet, laser or ink tank: more than a choice of ink

Occasional documents, school projects and photographs make different demands. Compare printing technology, paper handling, scanning and everyday operation before choosing cartridges or toner.

THE DIFFERENCES

Three approaches to printing

Three approaches to printing
Option Benefit Consideration
Cartridge inkjet A wide choice for documents and colour output. Check cartridge yield and maintenance with occasional use.
Ink-tank inkjet Refillable reservoirs can suit regular printing. Usually a higher purchase price; the printhead still needs care.
Laser or LED with toner Worth comparing for crisp text and larger document jobs. Check colour support, physical size and separate maintenance parts.

Everyday uses

Text, colour documents or photographs

Consider how often the printer sits unused as well as page volume. Scanning requirements can change the choice just as much as printing.

Occasional black-and-white pages

Compare a compact mono laser for text. Look at first-page time, size and straightforward printing from your devices.

Regular colour printing

Compare cartridge and tank inkjets for output quality, purchase price and refilling. Check separate colours and included ink quantities.

Scanning stacks or printing photos

Document feeders matter for paperwork; ink, paper and image quality matter for photos. These are different specialisations.

Two-sided printing is not two-sided scanning

Automatic duplex printing removes the need to turn pages by hand. An automatic document feeder, or ADF, passes a stack of originals through the scanner, but it may only scan one side. Look explicitly for duplex scanning and check whether it reads both sides in one pass. A flatbed remains useful for books, receipts and delicate originals.

SPEND WISELY

Worth paying more for

Reliable paper handling and automatic duplex scanning if you process documents regularly. For photographs, prioritise demonstrated output quality on suitable paper.

Lower priorities

High advertised dpi or maximum page speed without a benefit for your documents. A large tank printer offers little convenience if you hardly print.

An ink-tank printer is still an inkjet

Inkjets place liquid ink on paper from cartridges or refillable tanks. Laser and LED printers use toner. Tanks do not automatically improve photographs: the ink system, paper and actual output remain decisive. Inkjet nozzles may need maintenance after long idle periods. With toner printers, check whether drums and other maintenance parts are replaced separately.

Inspect the output you will actually print

Compare text, small lettering, charts and photos on your intended paper. A high dpi figure alone does not predict quality. Check borderless printing, supported sizes and paper weights. Photographs need convincing gradients and skin tones; documents benefit from readable text, resistance to smudging and good two-sided output.

Speed and paper handling

For individual pages, first-page waiting time can matter more than maximum speed. Check colour and duplex performance as well as the recommended monthly volume. Look at input and output trays and access for clearing jams. Measure the printer with its trays extended and covers open, not just the closed body.

Printing from your devices

Check support for your computers, phones and operating systems. Wi-Fi does not specify which mobile printing and scanning functions are available. Ethernet can suit a permanent workspace; USB provides a direct connection. Find out whether setup, local printing and scanning require a cloud account, and which software functions you need.

Consumables and subscriptions

Compare full-size cartridge or bottle prices and stated yields alongside the supplies included in the box. Photos and solid colour pages use more ink than light text. Check whether an ink subscription is optional, what happens after cancellation and whether an empty colour cartridge stops black printing. Include separate drums or maintenance boxes in the comparison.
