BUYING GUIDE
How much tablet do you actually need?
Compare a tablet as a complete setup: screen, apps, storage, keyboard and pen. Avoid paying twice for the same job.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Start with the tasks a tablet will take over. Add the accessories and software needed to do those tasks before comparing its price with a laptop or your existing devices.
1. Try the task before buying the device
Choose three real tasks, such as annotating a PDF, joining a lesson or editing a spreadsheet. Check that the tablet version of each app supports the features you need, including exporting files. If you intend to replace a laptop, test your most awkward workflow first. A demonstration of drawing or watching a film does not tell you whether your work documents, printer or school software will behave as expected.
2. Choose the screen and storage for your routine
Consider where you will hold or support the tablet. A larger screen may suit documents at a desk but feel cumbersome for reading on the train. Check the space needed for offline films, games and project files. Decide whether Wi-Fi meets your needs or whether mobile connectivity is worth the extra hardware and plan cost. Confirm the exact version before comparing shop prices; the same product name can cover different capacities and connections.
3. Build a complete price comparison
Illustrative example: a €350 tablet, €100 keyboard and €80 pen total €530 before paid apps or a case. A €450 alternative with the accessories you need included would cost less for that setup. These are assumed prices, not offers. Verify the exact pen and keyboard compatibility rather than relying on the brand name. Also check what is in the box and whether existing chargers or adapters meet the model’s requirements.
4. Plan for continued use
Check the manufacturer’s remaining software support and battery service options for the exact model. Use available EU label repairability information as another comparison point, not as a repair quote. Ask yourself whether an accessory will remain useful if the tablet is replaced. If it only fits this generation, include that dependency in your decision. A modest device that completes your three tasks can be better value than a premium model with unused capabilities.
