Three types of vacuum compared
| Option | Benefit | Consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Corded | Long cleaning sessions without a charging break. | The cable and hose determine your reach. |
| Cordless stick | Easy to grab for crumbs and shorter jobs. | Compare runtime with your actual head and power mode. |
| Robot | Routine cleaning of accessible floors. | Stairs, clutter and corners still need attention. |
Everyday uses
Carpets, stairs and everyday cleaning
Start with the surfaces you clean. Then consider the jobs that take effort, such as carrying the cleaner upstairs or removing tangled hair.
Carpets and pet hair
Start with the head and pickup tests on your floor type. Check how you remove hair from the roller.
Stairs and multiple floors
Try lifting it and feeling the weight in your hand. A compact cleaner can be worth more than another attachment.
A daily tidy-up
A stick vacuum or robot may fit. Choose between a quick manual clean and keeping the floor clear for a robot.
Choose the right type of cleaner
A corded cylinder or upright can handle longer sessions without recharging; a cordless stick is convenient for quick jobs but needs enough usable runtime. A robot can help with routine floor cleaning, but check thresholds, stairs, clutter, navigation and dock space. Decide whether the machine must clean the whole home or complement another cleaner.
SPEND WISELY
Worth paying more for
The right floor head, comfortable steering and replaceable parts.
Lower priorities
The largest wattage claim or a box of attachments you do not need.

Floor heads and actual pickup
List hard floors, thick carpets, rugs, upholstery and pet hair. Check whether the supplied head is suitable for your floor’s care instructions and whether a powered brush can be switched off. Seek pickup tests on similar surfaces and along edges. Electrical watts and advertised suction describe different things, and neither alone measures how much dirt the complete machine removes.
Collecting, filtering and disposing of dust
With a bagged vacuum, you dispose of collected dirt with the bag. You empty and clean a bagless container yourself. Check how this works and how much dust is released. A HEPA filter captures fine particles, but whole-machine performance also depends on seals. Look for tests that measure how much dust the complete vacuum releases back into the air.
Weight, reach and controls
Try steering, lifting on stairs and reaching under furniture. A stick vacuum’s weight in your hand may feel different from a cylinder trailing behind you. Compare cable reach, hose length, bin capacity, noise and whether the trigger must be held continuously. Make sure the attachments you need are easy to change and store.
Cordless runtime and battery design
Compare runtime with the floor head and power mode you will actually use; maximum claims may describe a low-power mode without a motorised attachment. Check recharge time and whether batteries are removable and available separately. For robots, inspect map controls, no-go areas, obstacle handling and what still works without a cloud connection.
Maintenance and parts
Check access to tangled hair, washable parts and filters, including required drying time before reassembly. Price replacement bags, filters, brush rolls and batteries. Make sure the charging dock fits near a socket. Choose the model whose cleaning performance and maintenance routine you can live with, then compare the price of the correct accessory bundle.
