BUYING GUIDE
Which washing machine fits your laundry routine?
Compare cleaning, drum capacity, programmes, spin drying, noise and maintenance, with efficiency as one part of the choice.
THE SHORT ANSWER
Start with your fabrics, normal load and available space. Cleaning results, useful programmes and quiet operation matter alongside water and electricity use.
1. Capacity and installation
Choose drum capacity for the laundry you regularly wash, including bedding. A larger headline capacity may apply only to cotton programmes: check limits for synthetics and quick washes. Measure depth with hoses, door clearance and the delivery route. Check front-loader or top-loader access, suitable flooring and any stacking requirements before choosing a model.
2. Cleaning and fabric care
Look for cleaning and rinsing tests on stains and fabrics like yours. Check dedicated wool, delicate and bedding settings against garment care instructions. Steam or hygiene programme names do not by themselves prove better stain removal; read what each programme actually does. Useful temperature and extra-rinse controls can matter more than a long list of preset names.
3. Programme time and everyday controls
Compare the duration and maximum load of the programmes you will use, rather than judging the machine by its shortest advertised wash. A quick cycle may only suit a small, lightly soiled load. Try the door, detergent drawer and display. Automatic dosing can simplify washing, but check detergent compatibility, adjustment and cleaning; an app is useful only if its features suit your routine.
4. Spin drying, noise and vibration
Higher spin speeds can leave less moisture in suitable fabrics, but the maximum rpm is not a cleaning score. Compare spin-drying results and whether speed is adjustable for delicate items. Check spin noise separately from wash noise. Installation, levelling and the floor affect vibration, especially upstairs or beside a living room.
5. Maintenance, protection and service
Check access to the pump filter, door seal and detergent drawer. Compare leak protection, child controls, spare-parts availability and repair arrangements. Read what any extended motor warranty covers; it may exclude other parts or labour. Include delivery, installation and removal of the old machine when comparing two otherwise suitable models.
6. Keep efficiency in proportion
The EU label reports electricity per 100 eco 40–60 cycles and water per cycle; other programmes and loads differ. Use these to compare suitable machines, alongside programme duration and wash performance. The optional calculator below estimates purchase plus electricity costs for your own usage. It does not score cleaning, convenience or durability.
Optional: compare purchase and electricity costs
Once two machines meet your needs, compare this part of their cost using your own usage. Starting numbers are examples, not live offers or average tariffs.
Estimate only: purchase price + (kWh per 100 cycles ÷ 100 × washes per week × 52 × €/kWh × years). Excludes water, detergent, delivery, repairs, financing and resale value. Actual programmes and loads change consumption. Years are your scenario, not a lifespan prediction.
